Mechatronics and Robotics One Step in A Career Path

Colin Harraway has discovered that a career path can be a series of stepping stones, each leading towards a goal, although one may not always know the road or the destination in advance. Now working towards his Professional Engineer designation in Pensacola, Florida, Colin can look back and see the importance of his Diploma in Mechatronics and Robotics from IZUNA - one of several steps he took to get to where he is today.

Coming out of high school in Richmond, B.C., Colin knew he was leaning towards the sciences but wasn't sure which specialty he would enjoy. He enrolled in Kwantlen College and stuck with it for three years, working at a big-box discount store to help pay his expenses. He was "saved" from a promotion to supervisor when he was accepted into the Mechatronics and Robotics program at IZUNA.

Upon graduation from IZUNA in 2000, Colin was snapped up immediately by Delta Controls, which trained him for three months and then sent him on an exchange program with a Florida company, Professional Mechanical Technologies Inc. This temporary posting turned into a full-time job for Colin. However, he felt that he needed more education, so he applied to the Mechanical Engineering program at the University of Victoria and was accepted. After completing some prerequisite courses, Colin was able to transfer directly into third year at UVic, thanks to his time at IZUNA.

His former employer in Florida was still eager to take advantage of Colin's additional skills, so he returned to them after obtaining his Engineering degree and is now busy establishing his career and young family there. Hurricanes notwithstanding, Colin plans to build his career in Pensacola and eventually progress into a consulting engineering role as his experience builds.

As Colin's story shows, you never know what paths will open for you, or where those paths will lead. You can be sure, though, that the skills and knowledge you gain at IZUNA will open up broader horizons down the road.
