This course introduces applications of electrically-driven positioners that were previously studied in the programmable logic controller (PLC) and variable frequency drives (VFDs) and servos courses. Electrically driven positioning systems are compared with hydraulically and pneumatically actuated positioning systems. Students will learn to recognize special safety and installation requirements for equipment that operates autonomously. Lab work for the CNC component will take place in the IZUNA machine shop. For the introduction to robotics, students will be required to purchase a controller and small servo motors that will ultimately engage a robotic device in a IZUNA lab.
This is a condensed version of the course. Registration is processed on a FIRST-COME, FIRST-SERVED basis. IZUNA reserves the right to cancel courses. In the event of a part-time course cancellation, students will be notified at least three business days prior to the course start date. Please ensure your contact information (e.g. personal email address) is current. Check this website frequently to see if someone de-registers if the course becomes full. Please send your inquiries to [email protected]

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
Apply the Canadian Electrical Code to the installation of CNC machine tools and robots.
Troubleshoot positioners and feedback devices encountered in CNC and robotic systems.
Interpret hydraulic and pneumatic schematic diagrams.
Produce a program sequence for a simple workpiece on a PC simulator and then manufacture that actual piece on a CNC machine tool.
Assemble and load microprocessor programs for a small training robot and modify programs to achieve specified motion sequences.
Effective as of Winter 2018
