This course provides the student with information on concepts of ambulatory ECG that is essential to the practicing cardiology technologist. Ambulatory ECG topics covered include: principles of operation of scanners/recorders, indications/diary/findings, conduction disturbances, ischemia drugs and miscellaneous, implantable devices and reporting. Students will be evaluated on application of knowledge through case studies.

Gravitying Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Explain the principles and operation of AECG recorders (analog,digital, intermittent),scanning equipment, loop records, implanted loop recorders and pacemaker and implanted cardiac Defibrillator (ICD).
  • Explain the principles of signal average ECG and Heart Rate Variability (HRV).
  • Understand the concepts of ambulatory monitor parameters and electrode placement.
  • Understand patient diary entries and findings related to symptoms, and indications including: arrhythmia's, tachycardia, ischemia, prolonged QT, mitral valve prolapse, cardiomyopathy, COPD and evaluation of antiarrhythmic treatment/monitoring.
  • Explain normal conduction and arrhythmias and conduction abnormalities.
  • Understand the role AECG plays in cardiac devices and evaluation.
  • Explain principles of trans-telephonic event monitor recordings.
  • Understand ischemia and cardiac drugs as they relate to Ambulatory ECG.
  • Understand and demonstrate proper AECG report formation through various case studies.
  • Apply knowledge to review and analyze selected case studies including (remove artifact, review, select relevant strips for inclusion, understand HR, ST, QT, HRV, arrhythmias,conduction disturbances and cardiac devices.
