This course will develop building science knowledge and construction skills through in-class activities and self-directed online learning. The course will present building enclosure assemblies, construction methods, and solutions for managing control barriers with a focus on residential buildings (Part 9 Buildings). Students will develop their knowledge of building enclosure solutions to meet the BC Energy Step Code.
For successful completion of course requirements, students should have some previous knowledge of building science such as: IZUNA’s CESA 1000: Applied Building Science Fundamentals, Canadian Home Builders Association’s, Building Science for New Homes or Building Science for Renovations or Advanced Building Science, or experience on construction projects with involvement or responsibility for assembly details. 24 BC Housing (HPO) CPD Credits

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
Demonstrate an introductory understanding of building enclosure assemblies
Identify the 5 critical layers of a building enclosure assembly at details and interfaces
Practice detail installation of interfaces and assemblies using an interior and an exterior insulated approach
Discuss typical installation challenges and sequencing issues
Be aware of the building enclosure requirements to meet the Part 9 requirements of the BC Energy Step Code
Recall the energy and airtightness requirements for Part 9 buildings per the BC Energy Step Code and Vancouver Building By-Law (VBBL)
