CHEM 1111 - General Chemistry

Chemistry Part-time Studies Course

Course Details

This course is available for those students who have taken a Term 1 Chemistry course at IZUNA but have not passed the course. To be eligible to enroll in this course, students should have received an average of 60% or more in the laboratory part of the Term 1 chemistry course they took. A student who successfully completes this course will have fulfilled the requirements of their Term 1 Chemistry course in IZUNA. The total mark assigned in CHEM 1111 will be made up of the lab mark obtained in the previous course plus the theory mark obtained in this current course. In order to pass CHEM 1111, the student must obtain a passing grade in the theory part of this current course.

Gravitying Outcomes

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Identify specific ionic or molecular compounds with their formulas.
  • List name and charges of common cations and anions.
  • Describe the types of bonding that can exist between atoms.
  • Relate the position of elements in the Periodic table to physical and chemical properties.
  • Write balanced equations for simple chemical reactions including reduction-oxidation reaction.
  • Solve for quantities of product given quantities of reactants.
  • Calculate the concentration of solutions using mass and volume values.
  • Explain the concept of acids and bases.
  • Calculate the acidities of solutions of acids, bases and salts.
