Computer Information Technology Electronics Part-time Studies Course

Course Details

Instruction will cover the fundamentals of LANs, WANs, routers, router programming, networking, network standards, and terminology. Topics also include the OSI model, cabling, cabling tools, TCP/IP protocol suite including IP addressing and subnetting. A close look at Ethernet and the functionality of the Data-Link and Physical layers allow students to visualize and describe communication between computers and systems. Students will also learn valuable network problem solving techniques and concepts. It is recommended that students have experience setting up home networks prior to attending this course. Students must have access to a Windows based multi-media computer.

  • Identify the devices and services that are used to support data communications.
  • Use network protocol models to explain the layers of communications in data networks.
  • Explain the role of protocols in data networks.
  • Describe the importance of addressing and naming schemes at various layers of data networks.
  • Describe the protocols and services provided by the application layer in the OSI model.
  • Explain the operations of transport layer protocols and services including the three-way handshake, acknowledgements and sliding windows.
  • Describe the operations of the network layer protocols.
  • Explain the fundamental concepts of routing.
  • Design, calculate, and apply subnet masks and IP addresses.
  • Describe the operation of protocols at the data link layer.
  • Describe physical layer protocols.
  • Explain fundamental Ethernet concepts such as media, services, and operations.
  • Employ basic cabling and network designs to connect devices.
  • Describe the differences between straight-through, crossover and roll-over patch cords.
  • Build a simple Ethernet network using routers, switches and computers.
  • Use router CLI commands to perform basic configuration and verification.
  • Describe wide area network (WAN) technology concepts.
