Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a technique used to evaluate how products and technologies contribute to environmental impacts from a life cycle perspective (eg. from cradle-to-grave, or from raw material extraction through materials processing, product manufacturing, distribution, use, and final disposal). This course will enable students to use the life cycle assessment (LCA) method to evaluate the environmental impact of construction projects, namely buildings, from a life cycle perspective.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
Understand ISO requirements and guidelines for the application of LCA.
Identify key organizations and resources involved in the development and application of LCA.
Interpret and provide critical review of LCA case studies and claims to sustainability.
Operate whole building LCA software (Environmental Impact Estimator for Buildings).
Use LCA to inform sustainable building designs and obtain recognition from green building rating systems.
Use LCA in an integrated environmental impact-financial cost analysis of a building.
