CNST 1100 - Construction Safety Officer Training

Construction Part-time Studies Course

School of Construction and the Environment

Course Details

This course helps prepare students for work as a safety officer on a construction, mine or oil and gas site. Students will learn how to clearly and effectively communicate with others on a work site, identify hazards, and apply the Workers Compensation Act and occupational health and safety regulations to their environment. Students will also receive training with hand-held fire extinguishers, and the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System. Upon successfully finishing this course, students will receive a Statement of Completion.

Prerequisite(s)

It is recommended that students have grade 11 English or equivalent comprehension, and one year of experience on a work site (construction, mining, or oil rig and gas) is beneficial.

  • Identify potential workplace hazards
  • Report on the conditions of workplace safety
  • Define hazardous materials and explain the WHMIS communication system
  • Define fire prevention codes and regulations
  • Describe safe rigging practice
  • Explain the safe use of fall protection equipment
  • Explain the identification and safe use of ladders
  • Identify TCP’s &Traffic Control
  • Identify Scaffolds, swing stages and elevating work platforms
  • Identify Cranes Safety & Certification
  • Identify Suspended slabs, fly tables, slab stripping and re-shoring & Form Work
  • Explain the regulations associated with Excavations and Shoring
  • Explain the regulations associated with Excavations and Shoring
  • Explain Electrical Safety within a work site & the Protection of Utilities
  • Define Safety Program Audit
  • Identify Guardrails, catch platforms, floor openings, crane platforms and nets
  • Explain Isolation & Lockout procedures
  • Develop Safe Work Practices
  • Identify Confined Space hazards
  • Identify Legal responsibilities related to site health and safety within the Act
  • Implement the Young and New Worker evaluation process
  • Explain Inspection Reports
  • Explain Accident Investigation
