This hands-on course is aimed at those with no graphics or 3D modelling experience. Students will learn how to create 3D models, then add texture maps and make them interactive online. Then there is an introduction to creating mixed reality simulations. Two open source tools are used; Blender 3D, and Gimp, plus the industry standard Unity Game Engine. Blender is used to create, manipulate and modify 3D models;, Gimp is used create seamless texture maps ;, and the Unity Engine is used to set up an interactive scene. Each student must provide their own 16 GB USB memory stick to save their work. Labs and exercises focus on how to create a 3D model in Blender, and then how to use scripts in Unity to interact with these models in a browser. After creating 3D simulations, students will explore Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and Mixed Reality. They will learn to create an account and download the Vuforia extension for Unity in order to create a simple mixed reality demo. Participants will also have access to a Microsoft HoloLens, a Virtual Reality headset, to experiment with creating their own demo in a VR/AR environment. Upon successful completion, students will be able to create a basic 3D simulation and have a basic understanding of Virtual and Augmented Reality. COMP 1910 students may want to complete COMP 1011 UX/UI Fundamentals concurrently.
COMP 1002 or equivalent knowledge of using a Windows PC and file management.
