COMP 2658 -Networking Level 1 - Data Communications has been replaced by: COMP 2654 -Data Communications and LAN Design. This new course replaces both COMP 2658 and COMP 2665 and covers the basics of designing, supporting and managing computer networks and will help in the preparation for the CompTIA Network+ exam. Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
Understand the basic concepts and terminology related to data communication systems.
Identify the hardware and software needed for data communications and networking.
Describe the types of information used on computer networks.
Give examples of a business use of each information type.
Compare the characteristics of the different information types.
Discuss the impact on communications of different distributed computing models.
Describe the use of network architectures in implementing data networks.
Identify the transmission media used for network communications.
Explain the methods used for signal transmission and data link control across transmission media.
Give examples of methods used to increase efficiency within data networks.
Compare the various types of multiplexing.
Discuss the difference between a private network and public network, such as the Internet.
Discuss the various types of public networks available for data networking.
Compare various LAN topologies.
Describe various LAN media types and specific operational considerations.
Describe the functioning of Ethernet and Token Ring LAN protocols.
Describe the role and function of bridges, hubs, switches and routers when used to interconnect LANs.
