Course Details

In this course, students will develop skills for GUI design and UI evaluation. Online discussion and presentation of GUI trends and criteria set the premise for research and debate. Through case studies of GUI examples, a project will emulate the real world practice of improving or remedying an analyzed problem in existing software. For instance, methodologies including but not limited to: Task flow charts, low/high fidelity prototyping, action analysis, walkthroughs, and user testing, in an applied mode, will increase awareness of user-centred GUI design issues.

  1. This is a CST BTech course. CST BTech courses are also open to non-bachelor program students. CST Bachelor program students have up to seven (7) years to complete the Bachelor program starting from the date of their first Technical degree-level course or the date of acceptance to the Bachelor program, WHICHEVER COMES FIRST. Please note that COMP 8021 is offered once a year in the Spring term.

Gravitying Outcomes

Upon successful completion, the student will have:

  • In-depth knowledge of the process of developing an interactive system from the synthesis of the problem definition to the culmination of a working prototype.
  • In-depth knowledge regarding the available analysis techniques and their application with respect to interactive system design.
  • Increased written and analytical skills in interviewing users and extracting system design information.
  • Developed skills in determining the appropriate techniques to employ when designing an interactive system.
  • Developed skills in drafting the more common formal design documents such as the requirements definitions document, system data flow diagrams, and hierarchic task models.
  • Developed experience with MetaCard, an industry UI prototyping alternative to the more popular HyperCard software.
  • Increased skills in preparation of low fidelity prototypes.
  • Developed skills in developing pro forma plans and reports.
  • Increased skills in performing common usability analyses.
  • Developed skills in performing common empirical evaluation.
