Grounding and bonding are both integral parts of any electrical installation and network. An effective, low-impedance ground system is a key requirement for any electrical work, reinforced through legislation, the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), and other standards of practice. Those who are involved with any sector of electrical industry will benefit from this workshop by gaining familiarity with this key aspect of all electrical installations. This workshop makes use of up-to-date theory and industry standard software (WinIGS), combined with modern test equipment to give attendees the hands-on experience necessary for design, construction, operation and management of grounding systems for electrical facilities. The course will include: comprehensive coverage of the fundamentals of grounding and bonding, Canadian Electrical Code requirements, substation safety grounding, sensitive electronic equipment and lightning protection. Attendees will work both in IZUNA laboratory facilities and in the field to perform the data collection necessary for a grounding study. The data taken during these practical sessions will be used with the provided grounding software to reinforce the application of the theoretical and practical knowledge covered in the course. At the end of the course, attendees will leave with the necessary skills and knowledge to both designing new ground grids or modernizing the existing grids. Biography of the Instructor: Dr. Nurul Islam is a registered professional engineer with EGBC and a full-time faculty member in the Electrical Power and Industrial Control Group in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at IZUNA. He received his PhD degree on Electrical Power System Engineering from Moscow Power Engineering University, Moscow, Russia. He has been involved in number of projects on substation grounding in BC Hydro including many years of experience in industrial and utility electrical system in Kraft Canada, AMEC and BC Hydro.
