This Simulated Electronic Navigation – Operational course complies with the requirements of the “Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) Convention.” The training will bridge the gap between theory and practice by providing the student with the required skill set to apply the Collision Regulations, and the principles to be observed in keeping a safe navigational watch. The students will be taught position fixing and monitoring techniques in coastal passages. Basic principles of bridge resource management, leadership, and teamwork skills will be incorporated in the course to promote safety of life at sea, and protection of the marine environment.
Students must have successfully completed the following training course and examinations prior to registering for the SEN-O training course: Electronic Positioning Systems (EPS) or Simulated Electronic Navigation 1 A Radio Operators Certificate (ROC-MC) Chartwork and Pilotage 2 (C&P2) Navigation Safety 1 (NS1)

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
Competently operate the marine radar, knowing its limitations and errors.
Construct MOT triangle paper radar plots in all radar display modes to obtain target's true course, true speed, CPA, TCPA, BCPA, and aspect.
Determine the course and or speed alteration required as per the Collision Regulations to obtain a predetermined CPA, TCPA (2 nautical miles in open waters), and time to resume original course and speed.
Plot two targets simultaneously on a plotting sheet to obtain full radar reports of both targets.
Set up the ARPA unit for multi-target collision avoidance with CPA, TCPA limits, and guard zone.
Use the trial manoeuvre to obtain a predetermined CPA for safe navigation.
Identify the errors and limitations of ARPA.
Operate electronic navigation systems for safe navigation and watchkeeping in confined and open waters.
Respond to navigational aid errors and malfunctions, which would include Radio, AIS, GPS, DGPS, Echo Sounder, Magnetic and Gyro Compasses, Speed Log, Radar, and ARPA.
Operate “own ship” controls in the type-approved simulator.
Demonstrate the ability to manoeuvre a vessel in loaded and ballast conditions, taking into account the effects of shallow water, squat, bank suction, tide, current, and weather.
Prepare the vessel for anchoring as the OOW.
Adhere to the principles of watchkeeping standards as per the STCW code, which shall include company and master’s orders, bridge records, and communication.
Explain and discuss the merits of Bridge Resource Management, including interaction with pilot.
Execute and monitor a passage plan near a TSS, and use parallel indexing in coastal waters.
Handle shipboard emergencies, including exercises in man overboard, steering failure, engine failure, and blackout.
