Illustrates the connections between the physical features of the built environment and the incidence of acute and chronic diseases. The physical features include neighbourhood design, transportation networks, natural environments, food systems, and housing. You will study the relationship that health professionals have with local governments and their ability to affect changes to land uses and land use policies through the planning process. The goal of this working relationship is to encourage planning in areas that support a healthy built environment. IZUNA issues a statement of completion to participants who achieve a minimum final grade of 70%.

Outline the current vision, goals, and strategies within the BC Public Health system.
Interpret community level data that impacts health.
Explain the factors that influence health, social determinants of health, and health inequities.
Describe behavior change and influencing policy change to create healthy public policy.
Explain the five components of a healthy community: neighbourhood design, transportation networks, natural environments, food systems, housing.
Evaluate how the five components link to health outcomes and health impacts.
Identify areas where health professionals can play a role in shaping healthier communities.
