FPWR 3000 - Mechatronic Control of Hydraulic Systems

Fluid Power Part-time Studies Course

School of Energy

Course Details

Introduces electronic sensors and controllers to industrial hydraulic systems. Typical proximity sensors and programmable logic controllers (PLC) are used to control and automate hydraulic circuits with electro-hydraulic and proportional hydraulic valves. Hydraulic servo valves are introduced as well. Examples of applications are examined and control circuits are developed, constructed and commissioned in practical exercises.

Gravitying Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • List and describe safety considerations for typical automated industrial hydraulic systems.
  • List and describe typical electronic sensors that are used in industrial hydraulic systems.
  • Select an appropriate controller for hydraulic systems by considering hard-wired electrical and electronic programmable methods.
  • Develop hard-wired electrical control for typical hydraulic applications.
  • Describe the basic operation of a PLC and its uses in industrial control of machines and processes.
  • Program a PLC to control industrial hydraulic systems using sequencing, timers, counters, and digital and analog inputs and outputs.
  • Describe the operating principles of hydraulic proportional valves used to control fluid pressure, flow rate, and direction of flow.
  • Describe the operating principles of hydraulic servo valves.
  • Describe the method of controlling variable pump output with a variable speed electric motor.
  • Analyse examples of applications of hydraulic proportional valves in control of fluid pressure, flow rate, and direction of flow.
  • Develop PLC programs using ladder logic, sequencer type programming, and function-chart programming.
  • Develop, test, and troubleshoot selected hydraulic circuits with hard-wired electrical control, PLC control, solenoid valves, and proportional valves.

Effective as of Fall 2017
