This Geomatics Engineering Technology Pre-Entry course is split into two parts comprising a Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) part and a Geospatial Software Applications part. For the CAD part of the course, students will gain knowledge in the creation of maps and develop basic map and plan drafting skills using current AutoCAD software. For the Geospatial Software Applications part of the course, students will use different software applications to solve survey geometry problems using COGO software, Microsoft Excel and Matlab. This course will also provide an introduction to Geographical Information System (GIS) concepts and terminology including spatial data models, databases, query, analysis, data input and editing.
2 years post-secondary education in any of the following: geography, geology, math, physics or engineering.
GEOM 2110, 2120 and 2130 are intended to be taken together. These courses are required for students with conditional acceptance into 2nd year of the Geomatics Diploma Program (Level 3) – contact Chris Thornton, Program Head, for more information. No class August 6, 2018.
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
Identify the components of a map or survey plan.
Explain the relationship of scale, paper size and survey area.
Describe the main concepts of the Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) environment.
Explain fundamental CAD concepts including layers, text creation and text styles.
Use the basic drawing, editing and inquiry commands in the AutoCAD environment.
Plot CAD drawings conforming to industry standards and scales.
Create and use industry standard symbols within the CAD environment to identify map features.
Create blocks with attributes.
Geospatial Software Applications
Use Coordinate Geometry (COGO) software to solve survey calculation problems such as intersections and traversing.
Solve survey geometry problems such as area, inverse and traverse, horizontal and vertical curve calculations using Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) tools for Microsoft Excel.
Create variables in Matlab, define expressions to convert Degrees, Minutes and Seconds to Decimal Degrees and solve Polar and Rectangular coordinate conversions.
Apply the fundamental concepts of GIS and databases to carry out attribute and spatial query operations.
Differentiate between vector and raster data models.
Utilize ArcGIS software to perform common analytical operations.
Import and edit data in ArcGIS and create a map layout.
