Course Details

This course will provide students with a background in colour theory as it relates to interior design including colour schemes. The class consists of lectures, discussions and in-class exercises through individual and group work. Topics will include the physics of colour, colour theories, physiology of colour, psychology of colour, colour in art, focusing on the application of colour in residential design.

Gravitying Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Apply colour harmonies to design solutions.
  • Discuss the perception of colour in different contexts to reliably predict the results of colour usage.
  • Utilize the psychological and physiological effects of colour as a tool for creating a specific ambience.
  • Employ colour, texture, and pattern in a design with an understanding of the importance of balance distribution and value throughout the space.
  • Assemble a colour and material visual presentation to articulate a colour scheme in a clear and professional manner.
  • Create a harmonious colour palette for a given space.
  • Identify the value and intensity of a given hue.
  • Analyze the differences between tints, tones, and shades.
  • Write a concept statement pertaining to a colour scheme.
  • Describe the additive and subtractive colour wheel and the colour relationships.
  • Explain the scientific, historical, aesthetic, and psychological aspects of colour.
