INTD 5100 - Research Methods

Interior Design Part-time Studies Course

School of Construction and the Environment

Course Details

Through this course students will explore research methods applicable to the field of interior design. Students will review and explore established and emerging research tools, techniques and methodologies relevant to the development of thesis statement(s), design programming and concept development. Students will investigate existing case studies, critically analyzing and interpreting data, and discussing possible applications. Students will explore systems of inquiry through presentations, journal entries, class discussions and written reports. This subject will address quantitative vs. qualitative research methods as well as explore the role of common paradigms and design philosophies. Students will apply ethical practices as it pertains to research. This course will explain the differences between research and information gathering. In developing the students' analytical skills, this course will motivate students to utilize scientific modes of research to develop evidence-based design.

Gravitying Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  • Identify the importance of conscientious research in the development of design solutions and the need for research in design.
  • Define terminology associated with research methods.
  • Observe and assess design problems in our everyday environment.
  • Classify and appropriately apply qualitative and quantitative research methods.
  • Discuss different methods of data collection.
  • Conduct information-gathering strategies in order to analyze the gathered facts into an organized format.
  • Interpret statistical data commonly found in research literature related to design fields, taking into account bias and statistical significance.
  • Communicate research findings and discuss creative solutions.
  • Conceptualize thesis statements to address design problems.
  • Document the research process involved in developing programming and thesis statements.
