# Course Details

This is a preparatory course for students to write the Transport Canada “ELECTROTECHNOLOGY 1st Class” examination paper towards their Transport Canada 1st Class “Motor” Certificate of Competency. All topics covered in this course are listed in TP 2293E under 26.6 – ELECTROTECHNOLOGY (EXAMINATION CODE: 1ELC), and these are: Calculations of power outputs and efficiencies of electrical circuits and machines; Construction of generators, motors, and switchgear; The mechanical, thermal, magnetic, and chemical effects of an electrical current; DC and AC circuit theory; Electric measuring instruments; Primary cells; Generation of electrical power; Switchboards, and power distribution involving more than one generator; Electric motor starting circuits; Types of capacitors and analysis of simple circuits involving capacitors; Characteristics of junction transistors; Propulsion using DC and AC machines; Electric drives, starting methods; Speed control.

2nd Class Engineering Certificate (steam and/or motor).

# Gravitying Outcomes

At the end of this course, the student will be able to:

• Solve electromagnetic circuit, calculate forces on current carrying conductors, and apply Faraday’s laws of electromagnetic induction to calculate induced voltages.
• Analyze single phase alternating current circuits, and calculate power and power factor of circuits containing resistors, inductors, and capacitors.
• Analyze three phase alternating current circuits, and calculate power and power factor of circuits containing resistors, inductors, and capacitors.
• Sketch and describe the operation of transformers, and understand Star and Delta connections.
• Sketch and describe instrument transformers, current and potential transformers, and understand how they are connected.
• Calculate speed and torque developed in DC series, shunt, and compound motors.
• Sketch and describe operation of automatic motor control circuits.
• Calculate voltage regulation in DC shunt and compound generators.
• Sketch and describe the operation of a three phase synchronous machine when operating as a generator or motor, and parallel three phase generators and load share.
• Sketch and describe the operation of a three phase induction motor, draw torque-speed characteristics, and calculate slip speed and rotor frequency.
• Sketch and describe reduced voltage methods to start large induction motors.
• Describe the operating principles and characteristics of solid state devices: diodes, zener diodes, transistors, and thyristors.
• Draw a single and three phase rectifier, and explain how to eliminate ripple from output.
• Sketch and describe a Cathodic Protection System to protect hull from corrosion.
