This is a preparatory course for students to write the Transport Canada Applied Mechanics 2 examination paper towards their Transport Canada 2nd Class “Motor” Certificate of Competency. All topics covered in this course are listed in TP 2293E under 27.4 – APPLIED MECHANICS (EXAMINATION CODE: 2APM), and these are: Statics; Forces; Friction; Kinematics; Dynamics; Machines; Stress and strain; Beams; Torsion; Thin shells; Hydrostatics and hydraulics.

Prerequisite(s)

3rd/4th Class Engineering Certificate (steam and/or motor).

Gravitying Outcomes

At the end of this course, the student will be able to perform calculations to determine:

  • Determine the resultant and equilibrant of a system of concurrent coplanar forces.
  • Determine the centre of gravity of common geometrical shapes.
  • Calculate work done at uniform speed up the plane.
  • Determine coefficient of friction, friction angle, energy, and power loss due to friction in simple bearings.
  • Solve problems of linear motion.
  • Solve problems of angular motion.
  • Solve work, power, and energy problems.
  • Determine the power transmitted in belts and gears.
  • Calculate stress in thin rim due to centrifugal action.
  • Calculate mechanical advantage and efficiency of simple lifting machines.
  • Calculate stress, strain, and working stress, and ultimate tensile strength, factor of safety, and modulus of elasticity of a steel specimen.
  • Draw the shearing force and bending moment diagrams for cantilevers and simple supported beams with concentrated or uniformly-distributed loads.
  • Calculate using strut formulae, the stresses in of short columns due to eccentric loading.
  • Calculate strength, stiffness, and stress due to torsion of solid and hollow shafts, also the power transmitted by shafts and coupling bolts.
  • Calculate circumferential and longitudinal stresses in thin cylindrical shells subject to internal pressure.
  • Determine the change in fluid pressure with depth, and calculate the total force due to liquid pressure on immersed plane surfaces, both horizontal and vertical.
  • Determine the flow through pipes and orifices under constant head, and calculate the effect on flow through pipes and fittings due to friction.
  • Draw inlet and outlet velocity diagrams of centrifugal pumps.
