Fundamentals of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, is an on line course that introduces students to the basic concepts in MRI. This course has nine modules that covers the physical principles of Magnetic Resonance Imaging. The course starts with a historical overview of the development of MRI. It then introduces basic mathematical concepts used in MR. The course introduces the basic principles of MRI and goes on to cover them in greater detail in the modules that follow. These include image weighting and contrast, special encoding and image formation, parameters and pulse sequences, instrumentation and equipment; and finally it introduces MRI safety, which is covered in more detail in a later course. This course is mandatory for all students before they can proceed further in the MRI program.

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
Outline relevant historical events leading to magnetic resonance imaging.
Apply the concepts of electricity and magnetism to the MR imaging process.
Apply the concepts of classical mechanics in explaining how MRI works.
Outline the events leading to the origin of the MR signal emanating from the patient.
Compare and contrast three principle characteristics of tissues (proton density, T1 and T2 relaxation times).
Explain how relaxation times T1 and T2 are measured.
Develop a general overview of the MR imaging process.
Outline the characteristic features of three major components (gantry, operating console, and the computer) of an MRI scanner as well as the subsystems of each of these components.
Outline the concepts of the digital image processing relevant to MR imaging.
Outline the characteristics of the spatial frequency domain and discuss the role of the Fourier Transform (FT) in MRI.
Outline the encoding of spatial characteristics of the MR Image.
Discuss the major factors affecting image quality characteristics of the MR Image.
Assess the biologic effects and physical hazards of three energy fields operating in MRI.
Outline the major recommendations for the safe use of MRI in medicine.
Outline various MRI system management considerations relating to MRI safety.
