Course Details

Covers fundamentals and applications of sprinkler systems in fire protection. Includes overview of fire protection sprinkler and standpipe systems, building codes, local building bylaws, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards. Students learn how to design sprinkler systems and selection of materials and components per NFPA 13 and 14 standards and to perform manual and computer-aided hydraulic load calculations for sprinkler systems. Examples of design and development of sprinkler system layout for buildings will be reviewed.

Gravitying Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Describe different types of fire sprinkler systems and components.
  • Define the applicable building code and bylaw requirements for fire sprinkler and standpipes systems.
  • Analyze buildings and occupancies in order to determine the minimum sprinkler design criteria in accordance with NFPA 13, 13R and 13D standards.
  • Design standpipe and hose systems in accordance with NFPA 14.
  • Design common sprinkler systems for office, residential, and retail occupancies.
  • Perform manual and computer-aided hydraulic load calculations.
