Course Details

An introduction to the care of critically ill patients, this course focuses on the knowledge, values, and beliefs central to the practice of nursing patients who experience life-threatening injuries. Throughout this course, students explore key concepts related to resuscitation including primary assessment and interventions and mechanism of injury. In addition, there is a strong focus on the needs of special populations. Pathophysiology, urgency determination, clinical reasoning, and patient assessment continue to be a focus for learning.

Gravitying Outcomes

In this course, learners will have opportunities to use the processes of critical thinking, systematic inquiry, communication, collaboration, leadership and professionalism. Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Relate the larger context of emergency settings to the social and political context of global issues including disasters, mass casualty situations, and epidemics.
  • Explain pre-hospital and intra-hospital decision making and the impact on emergency nursing and patient outcomes.
  • Apply key trauma concepts (mechanism of injury, trimodal distribution of death, the golden hour, and the trauma triad of death) to emergency care of trauma victims.
  • Describe how to effectively support and communicate during family witnessed resuscitation.
  • Explain the importance of understanding the phenomenological or “lived experience” of critically ill or injured patients and/or their families in crisis situations.
  • Apply the components of the systematic advanced emergency nursing assessment framework to a variety of critically ill and injured patient presentations.
  • Apply the concepts of oxygen supply and demand framework to a variety of critically ill and injured patient presentations.
  • Determine the level of urgency and prioritize care for complex emergency presentations in the context of trauma care.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of appropriate pharmacological interventions for critically ill or injured emergency patient presentations
  • Apply knowledge of anatomy and underlying pathophysiology to critically ill and injured patient presentations, including special populations such as pediatric and pregnant trauma victims.
  • Outline the general principles and management of advanced hemodynamic monitoring systems.
  • Interpret advanced hemodynamic and mechanical ventilation assessment data and apply it to the management of critically ill and injured patients.
  • Outline the general principles and management of mechanical ventilation systems.
  • Explain basic principles of forensic nursing science in the context of emergency care.
  • Describe basic principles of organ donation in the emergency department.
  • Use clinical reasoning to identify and manage actual and potential health-related problems in patients requiring resuscitation.
