This final theory course explores the care of critically ill pediatric patients in the emergency room context, by focusing on the knowledge, values, and beliefs central to the practice of nursing pediatric patients experiencing life-threatening injuries and illness. Throughout this course, students explore key concepts related to pediatric resuscitation, including primary assessment, life-saving interventions, and mechanism of injury. Pathophysiology, urgency determination, clinical reasoning, and patient assessment continue to be a focus for learning while exploring concepts of respiratory arrest, cardiac arrest, severe burns, septic shock, and multi-system trauma. Students will also begin to explore the concept of disaster management as it pertains to the pediatric population.

As licensed health care practitioners, all learners will practice in accordance with professional standards of practice throughout the course. In this course, learners will have opportunities to use the processes of critical thinking, systematic inquiry, communication, collaboration, leadership and professionalism. Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:
Describe the basic components of trauma systems and the impact on pre-hospital and intra-hospital decision making and the impact on pediatric patient outcomes.
Describe the underlying pathophysiology, assessment, and anticipated treatment of a variety of life-threatening health challenges in children, such as:
Spinal cord injuries
Impending respiratory and cardiac arrest
Apply key trauma concepts (mechanism of injury, trimodal distribution of death, the silver half hour, and the trauma triad of death) to emergency care of pediatric trauma victims.
Apply knowledge of the unique anatomy and underlying pathophysiology of pediatric patients to mechanism of injury in trauma.
Explain the considerations for and the role of the pediatric emergency nurse during family witnessed resuscitation of pediatric patients.
Contrast the characteristics, implications, and considerations of caring for pediatric patients with neurogenic versus spinal shock.
Apply the components of the Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) treatment algorithms to applicable patient presentations.
Demonstrate an understanding of appropriate pharmacological interventions for critically ill or injured children.
Apply the components of the pediatric emergency assessment framework to a variety of critically ill or injured pediatric patient presentations.
Apply the concepts of the oxygen supply and demand framework to a variety of critically ill and injured pediatric patient presentations.
Outline the general principles and management of mechanical ventilation systems in critically ill and injured pediatric patients.
Outline the general principles and management of advanced hemodynamic monitoring systems in pediatric patients.
Explain basic principles of forensic nursing science in the context of pediatric emergency care.
Interpret advanced hemodynamic and mechanical ventilation assessment data and apply it to the management of critically ill and injured pediatric patients.
Outline basic principles of effective end-of-life care for patients and their families in the pediatric emergency care context.
