Nursing Specialty Neonatal Part-time Studies Course

Course Details

This clinical course introduces learners to the care of infants experiencing common health challenges. This three-week clinical course takes place in a NICU and focuses on the following key areas of practice: assessment and care planning, medication administration, thermal management, nutrition, infection control, and developmentally supportive and family-centered care.

Gravitying Outcomes

As licensed health care practitioners, all learners will practice in accordance with professional standards of practice throughout the course. In this course, learners will have opportunities to use the processes of critical thinking, systematic inquiry, communication, collaboration, leadership, and professionalism. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate safe and competent nursing care in the six key areas of practice: assessment, medication administration, thermal management, nutrition, infection control, and developmentally supportive family-centered care.
  • Develop and use interpersonal skills to establish partnerships with infants, families, and the health care team.
  • Develop and use critical thinking skills to reflect on your own practice and learning.
  • Plan individualized nursing care for infants and their families, integrating knowledge of growth and development, pathophysiology, and developmentally supportive and family-centered care under the supervision of the clinical instructor/preceptor.
  • Demonstrate clinical decision-making skills to plan care for infants and their families under the supervision of the clinical instructor/preceptor.
  • Demonstrate accurate and timely documentation of nursing care.
  • Practice in accordance with Professional Standards for Registered Nurses.
