NSNE 7940 - Advanced Concepts in Neonatal Nursing

Nursing Specialty Neonatal Part-time Studies Course

Course Details

This course builds upon the concepts presented in NSNE 7100, 7200, 7300, 7900, and 7911. This course is offered over twelve weeks of guided independent study. A case-study format will be used to address the care of infants experiencing life-threatening health challenges, including aspiration, persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn, sepsis, multiorgan dysfunction, abdominal wall defects, hydrops, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy and extremely low birth weight. Treatment modalities such as venous and arterial access, various modes of invasive respiratory support, pharmacological support, and blood products are examined using a developmentally supportive and family-centered care approach.

Gravitying Outcomes

As licensed health care practitioners, all learners will practice in accordance with professional standards of practice throughout the course. In this course, learners will have opportunities to use the processes of critical thinking, systematic inquiry, communication, collaboration, leadership and professionalism. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Examine the life-threatening health challenges that can lead to multiorgan dysfunction syndrome in infants.
  • Examine various modes of invasive respiratory support.
  • Identify and examine pharmacological and non-pharmacological agents commonly used to treat critically ill infants.
  • Identify various treatment options for caring for infants with life-threatening health challenges.
  • Explore developmentally supportive and family-centered care within the context of caring for infants with life-threatening health challenges.
