Nursing Specialty Pediatric Part-time Studies Course

Course Details

In this 3 week preceptorship course, students develop and begin to enact their role in pediatric nursing by exploring the pediatric environment and assessing influences pertaining to pediatric patient and family health. Students will focus on applying and integrating theory and frameworks from the preceding courses, developing comprehensive assessment skills and applying this knowledge in the care of pediatric patients and their families. The course is centered on learning activities which are flexible and enable students to obtain a tailored clinical experience. Through these learning activities, students are provided with opportunities to build on the communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and systematic inquiry skills necessary to provide child and family-centered care. In particular, clinical decision making and articulation of a personal practice framework for pediatric nursing will be emphasized. Students will work with preceptors to promote safe, competent, and ethical nursing care. In addition, students will develop and foster collaborative relationships with patients, families, colleagues, instructors, and other health care providers. The core concepts of family-centred care and relational practice are threaded throughout pediatric course.

Gravitying Outcomes

As licensed health care practitioners, all learners will practice in accordance with professional standards of practice throughout the course. In this course, learners will have opportunities to use the processes of critical thinking, systematic inquiry, communication, collaboration, leadership and professionalism. Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate independent clinical decision making in pediatric critical care nursing during the care of pediatric patients and their families.
  • Use therapeutic communication, collaboration and partnership skills in the development and maintenance of nurse-child and nurse-family member relationships.
  • Document and articulate assessment findings and patient, family, and nursing concerns in a systematic and comprehensive manner.
  • Provide competent nursing care that acknowledges and encourages collaboration with the patient, family, and other inter-professional team members.
  • Plan, implement and evaluate nursing care of pediatric patients and their families which reflects consideration of available resources, principles of growth and development, knowledge of normal and pathologic physiology, family-centered care and standards of practice.
  • Provide safe, competent, and ethical nursing care for pediatric patients and their families experiencing a variety of health challenges.
  • Describe ethical issues commonly encountered in the pediatric critical care setting and identify issues that may contribute to moral distress.
  • Participate in ethical decision making in the pediatric critical care setting.
