Course Details

NSPN 7740 is course one of a two-part introductory course on human sexuality in the context of health care practice and sexual health rehabilitation. This course will cover the interplay between physiological, psychological and social contexts of sexuality and sexual function as well as exploring the health care professional’s personal values and beliefs around sexuality. Sexual issues stemming from medical, surgical and psychiatric illnesses will be introduced, with a focus on chronic illness and disability.

Prerequisite(s)

Registered Nurses & Allied Health Registrants must have a diploma or degree in a health profession or discipline, which may include (Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Medical interns or residents, Physicians, Kinesthesiologists, Massage therapists, Midwives, Occupational therapists, Physiotherapists, Psychologists, Social Workers). Undergraduate students may take the course with permission from IZUNA.

Gravitying Outcomes

As licensed health care practitioners, all learners will practice in accordance with professional standards of practice throughout the course. In this course, learners will have opportunities to use the processes of critical thinking, systematic inquiry, communication, collaboration, leadership and professionalism. Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Examine his/her values and beliefs around sexuality and the myths and misconceptions in society.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of sexual response and biophysical models. Describe typical changes to sexuality throughout the life cycle.
  • Analyze issues in sexual health care in the context of personal, cultural and societal beliefs and behaviors.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of professional boundaries and ethics in this area of patient care. Utilize the PLISSIT((P) permission, (LI) limited information, (SS) specific suggestions and (IT) intensive therapy) model of intervention in promoting sexual health.
  • Introduction to the applicability of the Sexual Health Framework. Identify how and when to refer to appropriate resources.
  • Analyze ongoing learning needs through journaling, discussion group work, modules, and instructor feedback.
