Office Skills Training Part-time Studies Course

Course Details

This course introduces students to the words and phrases of medical practice through an electronic server. Medical terms previously studied will synchronize with those being heard on the electronic server. The course is designed to prepare students at an entry level transcription level. Students are provided with the opportunity to develop skills to transcribe dictated materials in an accurate and complete manner, following the proper documenting formulas used in all areas of the medical field. This course is also designed for medical office personnel wishing to upgrade their medical transcription skills. Prior to taking this course, students should have verbal and written English skills at a BC Grade 12 (67%) level.

Prerequisite(s)

OFFC 1001, OFFC 1002, OFFC 1060 and typing speed of 40 wpm. Initial speed test will be given during first class.

Gravitying Outcomes

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Transcribe medical dictation in correct format for:
    • Medical Letters
    • Chart Notes
    • History and Physical Reports
    • Discharge Summaries
    • Operative and Pathology Reports
    • Miscellaneous Medical Reports
  • Apply correct transcription rules in the production of various medical documents.
  • Use proper capitalization and punctuation in production of documents.
  • Construct plural and adjective endings of medical terms.
  • Incorporate the correct spelling of English and medical terms and abbreviations presented by the electronic server either by memory or by utilizing a dictionary/reference book.
  • Identify generic and brand name drugs by utilizing the Physician’s Compendium of Pharmaceuticals and Specialties (CPS) as a reference.
  • Demonstrate effective proofreading skills.
  • Attain a net typing speed of 50 wpm
