Course Details

In this course, you will be presented with basic clinical procedures and tests commonly performed in a medical office setting. You will be provided relevant theory about procedures and tests and will develop a beginning competency in selected clinical skills. You will examine the correct procedure for properly disposing of bio-hazardous materials, and the names of basic instruments and equipment used in a medical office. The course will also explore the process to setup an examination room with the appropriate equipment, triage emergent medical conditions, and steps to assist the physician.

Gravitying Outcomes

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Apply basic infection control and medical asepsis techniques.
  • Carry out sterile techniques and sterile procedures.
  • Find specific information in the "Medical Office Assistant Handbook".
  • Describe x-ray procedures, minor office surgeries, physical exams, specialty visits, and procedures.
  • Take patient vital signs including blood pressure, temperature, pulse, and respiration.
  • Weigh and measure babies and adults.
  • Describe and educate patients as necessary regarding medical office procedures.
  • Perform urinalysis, pregnancy testing, and eye examinations.
  • Name the basic instruments and equipment used in a medical office.
  • Set up the examination room with the appropriate equipment.
  • Describe patient consent and privacy policies to patients.
  • State why it is important to have accurate documentation.
  • Order clinical and laboratory supplies.
  • Care and maintain surgical/medical instruments.
  • Operate an autoclave.
  • Apply WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Material Information System) regulations to the workplace.
  • Describe the role of Public Health regarding immunization and other issues.
  • Describe oxygen use and treatment regimes required for emergent conditions.
