This basic level course is intended to survey the general background of production planning and control and materials management from the supplier through to the consumer. Major topics include the production planning system (MRP II) master production scheduling, capacity management, production activity control, purchasing, forecasting, inventory fundamentals, independent demand inventory and physical inventory warehousing and distribution.

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
Explain the supply - production - distribution system.
Develop a Production Plan.
Develop a basic Master production Schedule.
Describe Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRPII).
Use Materials Requirements Planning (MRP) to determine order release dates and quantities.
Develop a Bill of Materials.
Calculate work center capacity.
Construct operations schedules.
Explain common purchasing practices required to locate suppliers, determine specifications and negotiate terms.
Calculate forecasts for inventory items.
Apply independent inventory management techniques to determine what, when and how much to order.
Explain the basic terminology of warehousing and distribution.
Explain the use of just-in-time and visual control techniques.
Explain project management techniques that may be used in a production management environment.
