PHYS 2149 - Physics for Mechanical

Physics Part-time Studies Course

School of Computing and Academic Studies

Course Details

PHYS 2149 is an algebra-based physics course that addresses topics of special relevance to mechanical engineering. There are three major topic areas: Part 1 Electricity; Part 2 Magnetism; and Part 3 Waves and Light. The accompanying lab activities emphasize the proper techniques of measurement, experimentation, graphical data analysis, and error analysis. Practical applications of physics are discussed.

Gravitying Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Calculate electric quantities and draw field/equipotential lines for point charges. [1]
  • Define/explain the relationships between voltage, current, power, and electric field. [1]
  • Calculate capacitance w.r.t. plate separation, area, and material between plates. [1]
  • Solve series and parallel circuit problems with resistors or capacitors. [1]
  • Solve magnetic field, flux, force, electromagnetism, magnetic permeability problems. [1]
  • Solve electromagnetic induction, inductors, transformers, magnetic energy problems. [1]
  • Explain operating principles of generators/motors and other electrical devices. [1]
  • Explain operating principles of generators/motors and other electrical devices. [1]
  • Define/explain the relationships between standing waves, harmonics, and overtones. [1]
  • Solve problems related to the Doppler effect. [1]
  • Define/explain relationships between the standard quantities in light applications. [1]
