Course Details

The Urban Forest Assessment course provides training in ecosystem values and assessment protocols for urban forests and the application of this information in regional land management. This knowledge is increasingly relevant in municipal planning and in the assessment and enhancement of natural capital and infrastructure. I-Tree software provides an economic value for ecological services such as for pollution mitigation, avoided runoff, carbon sequestration, and provides valuable information about pest and storm water risk management. This course include an understanding of the basics of urban forest assessment, the ability to sample larger areas or patches of urban trees, compile, prepare and submit data to the i-Tree system. Students will also have the opportunity to review a typical i-Tree report. The Urban Forest Assessment course is applicable for students in studying ecological restoration, forestry, resource management, arborists, planners, consultants, stewardship groups and teachers. The course will consist of 1 day online learning and two days of combined classroom and field work.

  1. This course is a blended course, with 8.0 hours delivered online and 16.0 hours delivered in person over two days in the field at the Burnaby Campus on August 24 & 25. Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear comfortable shoes.

Gravitying Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Describe elements of an urban forest.
  • Demonstrate understanding of designing inventory for specific management objectives for urban trees.
  • Provide overview of i-Tree and its main function and application.
  • Use and apply i-Tree Design, i-Tree Canopy and myTree.
  • Describe function of i-Tree Eco including attributes for tree observations.
  • Practice collection of tree observations with i-Tree Eco attributes.
  • Create an i-Tree Eco project.
  • Identify study area and navigate to the site using a variety of tools.
  • Apply i-Tree Eco data collection method for complete inventory survey in the field,
  • Prepare field data for i-Tree Eco submission.
  • Use i-Tree Eco to error check data and trouble shoot issues .
  • Review reports generated by i-Tree.
