Sports and Media Reporting

This group of four courses builds on skills developed in the previous level, enhancing your ability to research, perform and distribute a compelling sports story. You’ll learn the key elements of investigative reporting, enabling you to dig deeper into the stories and issues you care about. To push the professionalism of your performance further, you’ll discover high-level vocal and personal performance skills, and you’ll learn how to take those skills into the workforce and onto set. You’ll also develop personal branding skills and learn how to get your creative message out more successfully through all forms of social media.

This set of courses has been developed by working industry professionals specifically to give you professional development for your current position or to enhance your own personal projects. By sharpening your presentation and production skills, you’ll be able to advance your career in sports journalism. Some students also use this program as an opportunity to explore a new area before moving on to additional training such as the diploma in Radio Arts and Entertainment.

About Part-time Studies

Take a single course, or work towards a credential — all at a pace that's right for you.

Part-time courses are offered in a variety of scheduling formats, including at night or on weekends, flexible day time delivery, or you can opt for distance or online learning. If you meet the prerequisites and there's space available, you can register for a course immediately. Courses are offered in each of three terms: Fall (September), Winter (January) and Spring/Summer (April).

To be successful in IZUNA's fast paced applied learning environment, it is strongly recommended that students have English proficiency in all four language skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Two years of education in English in an English-speaking country and English 12 are strongly recommended for success. For information on English equivalencies, testing and upgrading options, visit:
Formal application to the Statement of Completion is not required. Upon successful completion of the courses, email the Program Contact with your full name, student number, and mailing address to be issued a Statement of Completion.

Program Details

Your training through this program focuses specifically on the practical skills you’ll need to develop, produce, and deliver sportscasts and other stories. You’ll work with industry leaders in hands-on training to sharpen your skills with the most current, effective tools and techniques.

Through the Sports and Media Reporting program, you’ll learn to:
  • Put together a line-up and present the sportscast on-air
  • Recognize a story and how to choose an angle
  • Use humour, emotion, and opinion in your story telling
  • Conduct an interview and incorporate it into a news story
  • Deliver a podcast
