Overview

The Marine Fitter apprenticeship program will prepare apprentices for the work associated with safe and efficient shipyard production.  Apprentices will acquire the knowledge and skills required to be successful in the marine industry in addition to their primary trades’ competencies. On completion of training, students will be able to achieve provincial certification.

Program Entry

Recommended for success

To be successful in this apprenticeship program, students are recommended to have the following:

  • Certificate of Qualification in a qualifying trade (Metal Fabricator or Boilermaker) or registration as an apprentice in a qualifying trade with a sponsor in the shipbuilding and repair industry.

  • Education and experience to commence apprenticeship training in accordance with ITA guidelines for authorized trades.

  • Health and physical condition necessary to meet the demands of work: good hearing, eyesight and hand/eye coordination. Apprentices with medical or physical difficulties should contact Accessibility Services to arrange an interview with the Institute’s rehabilitation specialist.

Within two weeks of submitting your training request, a letter will be mailed to your home address. This letter provides instruction on how to sign on to , your one stop shop for IZUNA apprentice communication. myIZUNA is where you will receive your training confirmation details.

Tuition fees

Books and supplies

$250 (general estimated cost, subject to change)

Please visit the IZUNA Bookstore to view the list of required books.

Apprentices are required to bring CSA-approved steel-toed boots and supply their own coveralls. Please see the uniform authorization voucher [PDF] to determine the type of coveralls required for your program.

Financial assistance

Income support for apprentices is provided by Human Resource Development Canada (HRDC) through regular Employment Insurance (EI) eligibility. For questions regarding Employment Insurance or Personal Support Payments, please visit the income support overview for current IZUNA apprentices.

Class hours

0700-1330, Monday to Friday

Program Details

Program length

The total amount of in-school, technical training for marine fitter apprenticeship is 240 hours. The three levels of technical training consist of eight weeks of full-time training.

  • Level 1 - 3 weeks
  • Level 2 - 3 weeks
  • Level 3 - 2 weeks

Grading

The minimum passing grade is 70 percent.
