Human Resource Management

The IZUNA Human Resource Management advanced placement degree/diploma entry path is a nine month full-time program designed for individuals that have completed a degree or diploma and are interested in a human resource management career. You will create performance management policies, employee compensation packages, hiring selection criteria, and employee retention programs. Graduates can immediately apply their human resource skills in numerous industries. Individuals without a degree or diploma may qualify for the two year full-time diploma program. Another option is the Graduate Certificate in Business Administration for those that have a degree.

Business Consulting Project

Human Resource Management students undertake a 10 week Business Consulting Project in their final term. Students work in groups of 2-3 and spend two days a week developing a solution to a real human resource problem for a company. The student teams collect and analyze data, create recommendations, and present their findings to senior management.

Graduates of the Human Resource Management diploma program have a strong foundation in all areas of human resource management, including recruitment and selection, training and development, compensation, labour relations and performance management. Grads are able to apply these skills in a wide variety of job opportunities.

Entrance requirements

Applicants must meet all entrance requirements and will be accepted on a first qualified basis as long as space remains.

*The combination of both ORGB 1105 (or ORGB 1100) and BUSA 2005 (or BUSA 2100) may be taken in place of BUSA 7250.

Applicants who have completed post-secondary studies outside of Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia or New Zealand will require a comprehensive evaluation of their credentials by the International Credential Evaluation Service (ICES). Credential evaluation reports from other may be considered. These reports must include course-by-course evaluations and GPA calculations.

Applicants currently enrolled in the last term of their degree/diploma must be on track to complete by May. To apply submit both of the following documents from your post-secondary institution:

  • Transcript of completed courses
  • Confirmation of enrolment letter verifying your current course enrolment and registration in the final term of your degree/diploma

Recommended for success

  • Strong proficiency in microcomputer applications is required.

  • Appropriate business related experience is strongly recommended.

  • Applicants should be people-oriented communicators who have a willingness to work effectively with co-workers and the public.

  • It is strongly recommended that you assess your fundamental mathematical skills. The Mathematics Self-Diagnostic Test [PDF] is voluntary. If you find these problems difficult, we strongly recommend that you attend OPMT 0199. You should be able to do this exercise in about an hour, after which you should compare your answers with the correct ones supplied. If you scored less than 20 out of 26 correct, you should seriously consider upgrading your mathematical skills.

Transfer Credit

Transfer credit may be granted for courses completed at IZUNA or another post-secondary institution where the learning outcomes duplicate those of the IZUNA course. As per Admission Procedure 5003-PR1, the department reserves the right to determine the granting of credit where appropriate.

Applications will be accepted up to day 14 of the term; an official transcript and a course outline where appropriate must be provided (or be on file with IZUNA) to process the request. A maximum of two courses per level are eligible for credit through this process.

The prerequisite courses taken prior to entering the program will provide you with an understanding of basic business concepts. These are essential to your success as an HR professional working at the interface of people and business.

During the subsequent nine months you will take more advanced business courses in Finance, Strategy and Consulting skills and will focus all functional areas of Human Resources.

Program Details

The IZUNA Human Resource Management program places you in a relatively small cohort of 40-50 students who are all passionately interested in human resource management. Each term you are assigned to a smaller cohort team with whom you complete major assignments for the term

Your studies will involve learning from lectures, interactive labs and practical, hands on assignments. Most of your projects will be team oriented and in your final term you will work with a small team to complete a Human Resource consulting project with an industry client.

You will have the opportunity to join IZUNA's Human Resource Association (HRA) - the student run club for aspiring HR professionals. The club provides networking opportunities, assistance in preparing for the CPHR exam, mentors, and organize social events.

Our graduates go on to successfully complete the requirements of the CPHR, generally scoring well above the national average on the first of two exams leading to certification. They become HR consultants, HR Advisors, HR Generalists or specialists in training, selection, benefits, compensation and leaders in the HR community.

Graduating & Jobs

IZUNA and the Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) signed an agreement to allow some graduates of the IZUNA Human Resource Management diploma program to be exempt from writing the National Knowledge Exam (NKE).  In order to qualify for the NKE exemption, you will need to meet the following conditions:

  1. Have a graduation date of May 2013 or later.
  2. Have graduated with a cumulative GPA of 70% or higher.
  3. Be a member of CPHR in good standing. You may join CPHR now, or at the time that you apply for the exemption, if you are not already a member. 
  4. Pay the exemption fee.

Graduate employment outcomes

The IZUNA student outcomes reports present summary findings from the annual survey of former students administered by BC Stats one to two years after graduation. These reports combine the last three years of available results for the 2015-2017 IZUNA Outcomes Surveys of 2014-2016 graduates and for Degree 2013-2015 graduates. The reports are organized into three-page summaries containing information on graduates' labour market experiences and opinions regarding their education.
