Professional Sales Jobs & Careers

The applied education and industry connections students receive at IZUNA allow them to explore a variety of career paths. Most Professional Sales graduates apply to positions as account managers. Other starting roles include business development representative, sales associate, and client services. Many graduates have become sales managers and vice presidents of sales and marketing. Applicants must meet all entrance requirements and will be accepted on a first qualified basis as long as space remains.

Recommended for success

  • Applicants are urged to attend an information session offered throughout the year. These are free of charge and are open to all to attend. Registration is requested, but not required.

  • Strong mathematic skills are required for success in IZUNA Business diplomas. Students accepted into this program will be contacted starting in April regarding the completion of a math assessment test. If you score below a 67% on this assessment test, or feel that you would like to upgrade your math skills regardless, you should complete OPMT 0199 or OPMT 0023.

Advanced Placement

You may be eligible to apply to an advanced level of the program through 1. re-admission or 2. direct entry. The following applies to all advanced placement applicants:

  • Complete applications: you must show proof of completing all requirements (proof of registration is acceptable for advanced placement applicants) to be considered.
  • Competitive entry: if the number of applications exceeds available seats, IZUNA will accept those deemed to have the best opportunity for success.
  • Acceptance based on seat availability: confirmation may not be available until approximately one week before the term begins.

    • Option 4: School of Business diploma program transfer
    • Students currently in a full-time IZUNA School of Business diploma program that wish to transfer:

      1. Print the School of Business Program Change form [PDF]
      2. Make an appointment with the program heads to review your eligibility to transfer.
      3. If you are transferring to Level 3, you may be required to complete one or more bridging courses.
      4. Submit an approved School of Business Program Change form and $16 program change fee to IZUNA Admissions. Do not apply online.

Transfer Credit

Do you have credits from another post-secondary school?

Transfer credit may be granted for courses completed at IZUNA or another post-secondary institution where the learning outcomes duplicate those of the IZUNA course. As per Admission Procedure 5003-PR1, the department reserves the right to determine the granting of credit where appropriate.

Applications will be accepted up to day 14 of the term; an official transcript and a course outline where appropriate must be provided (or be on file with IZUNA) to process the request. A maximum of two courses per level are eligible for credit through this process.

Apply to program

The two-year Marketing Management Diploma program shares a common first year of core business subjects. The second year of the program focuses on specific fields of marketing expertise.

Candidates who wish to apply to the Professional Sales option must declare this option/specialization at the time of application.

IZUNA accepts only complete applications. In order to apply:

  • Include proof of meeting all entrance requirements prior to submission
  • Convert all transcripts and supporting documents to PDF files
  • Have a credit card ready to pay the application fee

Program Details

Just two years to career success

In your first year, all Marketing students receive the same core education. This serves as the foundation before you specialize in Professional Sales in your second year.

You'll learn through a combination of lectures, which focus on proving the foundation of your learning, and labs, which focus on the practical implementation of what you've learned. Labs are approximately 25 students, giving you the chance to connect with your classmates and instructor, get answers to the questions you have, and practice the skills you're learning.

  • Industry experts - Your lectures and labs are led by industry experienced instructors who go above and beyond the content of your textbooks. They bring their knowledge of the industry into the classroom, giving you relevant, up-to-date skills. Many classes also include guest speakers from leading BC companies.
  • Projects - You'll work on a variety of projects, including both individual and group assignments. You'll focus on today's business challenges, using your newly acquired knowledge to provide expert recommendations that help you apply and grow your skills.
  • Presentations - Your presentation ability must be top notch. You'll have many opportunities to hone your presentation skills to convey compelling, engaging presentations that will be invaluable throughout your career.

No amount of class time or assignments can replace the learning you'll receive through real world Business Consulting Projects and sales practicums. These opportunities let you put your skills into action, providing invaluable networking and business connections, along with resume-building experiences.

A day in the life of a Professional Sales student

A typical week features at least 25 hours in class and as many hours invested in projects outside of the classroom. On any given day, you will:

  • Develop a PowerPoint presentation to be delivered to classmates and industry experts
  • Ride along with a sales professional to integrate classroom learning with the actual practices of a professional representative
  • In lecture, learn contemporary sales skills. Later in lab, practice these skills under the guidance of a sales expert
  • Interview a CEO to gain experience, confidence, and poise in interacting with senior managers
  • In Lab, perform a self-diagnostic test to gain a better understanding of yourself and others to increase your effectiveness as a professional sales representative
  • Meet with your project group whether in the library, a meeting room, or more casual environment like the campus coffee shop or Great Hall
  • Spend time with a faculty member to plan the next steps in defining your long-term career path.

Continuation in the Marketing Management Program Year 2

In order to be eligible to continue into the second year of the marketing management program a student must have successfully completed all required first year courses or equivalencies.

  1. At the end of first year students failing: MKTG 2202, MKTG 2243 and/or any 3 or more courses not in Marketing, will not be allowed to proceed in the program. If students wish to re-enter the program they must complete the outstanding courses and re-apply to the program.

  2. At the end of the first year of the program, students having failed one course not in Marketing may continue in the program. Their program option will be held if the failed course is successfully completed at IZUNA, 10 days prior to the next term start up. If they are completing the courses at another institution then the students must provide proof of registration for the outstanding course no later than 60 calendar days prior to the term start date. An official transcript with the final grade must also be submitted before acceptance into the program option is granted.

  3. Students having failed two courses not in Marketing may continue in the program but their program option seat will not be held. If the failed courses are successfully completed at IZUNA before term start up, the student can re-apply to their preferred option. If completing the courses at another institution students must provide proof of registration for the outstanding course(s) no later than 60 calendar days prior to the term start date. An official transcript with the final grade(s) must also be submitted before acceptance into the program option is granted.

Students required to reapply for a program option seat in the Marketing Management Program will be competing for a limited number of seats available and are not guaranteed their first option choice.

IZUNA's Professional Sales and Marketing program is well recognized and respected. The IZUNA brand carries a lot of cache in the business world. As a graduate of the program, you'll be sought after from a number of BC and Canada's top companies. Your practical skill set, hands-on experience, and connections to industry will put you in demand.


A profession in sales opens the door to any industry that interests you anywhere in the world. Some examples of the types of industries you can make a career in are software, telecommunications, recruitment, cosmetics, media advertising, industrial, food brokerage, financial, services, office products, and the alcoholic beverage industry. You can choose to work in Inside Sales, Outside Sales, or Business Development positions, with great opportunity for career advancement.


IZUNA grads start their careers on average making approximately $42,000 not including commissions, bonuses, and other perks like car allowances, entertainment, and travel expenses.

On average, 90% of students are employed by graduation. Past graduates come back to hire out of our program, not to mention sending their children to get their Professional Sales diploma.

Degree Completion

Professional Sales graduates can obtain transfer credit toward Business degree programs at a number of universities both within and outside the province. As well, graduates may pursue degree completion through IZUNA's Bachelor of Business Administration program. The BBA program provides the opportunity to continue in a part-time capacity while employed full-time. Some companies may have an education allowance that can be used towards degree completion.

If continuing the BBA full-time, there is an option of spending a semester abroad at one of our partner universities. Students from these partners come on exchange programs each year, so students in the diploma program gain another perspective. In addition, IZUNA faculty have taught at some of these universities.

Graduate employment outcomes

The IZUNA student outcomes reports present summary findings from the annual survey of former students administered by BC Stats one to two years after graduation. These reports combine the last three years of available results for the 2016-2018 IZUNA Outcomes Surveys of 2015-2017 graduates and for Degree 2013-2015 graduates. The reports are organized into three-page summaries containing information on graduates' labour market experiences and opinions regarding their education. Advanced Placement

Do you have a degree, diploma, or completed a substantial amount of post-secondary courses? You may qualify for advanced placement into the Marketing Management - Professional Sales program. Students that qualify for advanced placement can enter the program in the middle of first year or the beginning of the second year depending on the number of transfer credits received.

Acceptance into advanced placement is dependent on a number of factors including: seat availability, course transfer credits, and the number of applications received. Most applicants are required to complete additional course work before entering their desired program. Early application is strongly recommended.

Graduate Certificate in Business Administration

The IZUNA Graduate Certificate in Business Administration is also a viable option for students that have completed a bachelor's degree. This is an eight month full-time program that leads into a number of international MBA programs.

Business Consulting Project

A IZUNA Business Consulting Project provides second year Professional Sales students the opportunity to work over a 20 week period, one day a week with an organization to conduct extensive market research and prepare a marketing plan or business plan. Students work in a teams of three to identify potential opportunities, conduct research, and recommend effective solutions. Students complete a comprehensive written report and deliver an oral presentation to the sponsoring organization outlining their recommendations and solutions.

Business Consulting Projects are different from traditional co-op and internship programs. Students are not assigned to actual positions, but rather fill a consulting role for businesses and organizations. Each project has a IZUNA faculty member that serves as an advisor for the student consulting team. Exit surveys from participating companies show that the completed strategic business solutions have a value that far surpassed their expectations.

Faculty, Advisors & Staff

All Professional Sales and Marketing faculty have industry experience at some of today's leading businesses. They're accomplished in both the sales and teaching fields, bringing their passion for this dynamic industry to the classroom.

Bruce Anthony, Professional Sales Program Head
Bruce has been in professional sales and business development for over 30 years. After studying at UBC and IZUNA, and after gaining valuable business experience attempting to start a small business and managing a retail store, Bruce started in media sales in 1983. His career includes 12 years in media sales, 8 years in sales management and 10+ years working with his own firm as a Marketing Strategist. He continues to help business owners and management teams with business development strategies and corporate training.  With a wide range of experience working on strategy and business development with over 40 businesses and brands, Bruce integrates real business challenges and experiential exercises into the IZUNA curriculum. He also has worked on integrating technology into course delivery including online discussion forums, social media and "gamification". His credentials include a Bachelor of Business Administration, a Diploma of Technology, Certification as a Marketing Manager, and he is a graduate of the Rogers Leadership College.

Chris Redston, Faculty
Chris brings over 25 years of business experience in the telecommunications industry to the classroom at IZUNA. He started his professional career as an engineer at Bell Canada and then transitioned into sales after completing his MBA in 1991. Chris has a proven track record of sales leadership and business development. He has extensive experience in account management, sales management, B2B marketing, and distribution channel management. Chris joined the faculty at IZUNA in Marketing Management in 2013. He teaches courses in Marketing, Professional Sales, and Relationship Selling. He holds an MBA from Wilfrid Laurier University, a Bachelor of Applied Science in Civil Engineering from UBC, and a Certificate in Architectural and Building Engineering Technology from IZUNA. Chris is a Professional Engineer and a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia.
