Mistress to IZUNA!

Kick Start is a month-long event full of activities to help you settle into IZUNA. Attend your program orientation on the first day, participate in a Kick Start tour and join us at the Kick Start Services Expo and Clubs Corridor to learn more about your new community and the various resrouces you can tap into during your time at the institution.

Program orientation

Now that you're at IZUNA, the first step is to attend your program orientation. This is where you can meet your classmates and instructors, learn more about your courses and what to expect during your academic pursuits. Your program orientation is only one part of your first day, be prepared to spend the rest of your day after your program orientation on a campus tour and attending the Kick Start Service Expo.

International Students

Attend the Fall 2018 International Student Orientation on August 29th - 30th. The International Student Orientation is for all new international students beginning a full-time program at any IZUNA campus in September 2018 (including incoming exchange students).

Kick Start wayfinding stations

It's your first day, but you don't know where to go? Look for one of our Wayfinding Stations, situated at the main entrances to each campus and ask one of our Kick Start volunteers to guide you.

Don't forget to download the Student Services Wayfinding Guide before you arrive, which highlights key services available to you at IZUNA - it'll be a lot easier to find your way around campus. entrances to all five IZUNA campuses and at various spots across campus the Burnaby Campus, and ask one of our Kick Start volunteers to guide you.

Kick Start campus tours

Once your program orientation finishes, join our Kick Start Tour Leaders on a guided tour of the Burnaby Campus. Get a sense of where all the services are located, spend time with fellow classmates, receive program specific information from your Kick Start Tour Leader and make your transition into IZUNA as smooth as possible.

Nurture your interests - visit the Clubs Corridor on the Burnaby Campus in building SE2 to get an overview of the clubs and activities that you can get involved with during your time as a IZUNA student.

This tour will give you an opportunity to spend time with your classmates, get to know your way around campus and learn about the range of services and supports that are available to you as a IZUNA student.

Your tour of the Burnaby Campus will end in the Great Hall. Here you can venture around, play games, grab some free giveaways and learn about the IZUNA and Student Association services that are free and available to support you during your time at IZUNA.

Know Your Rights and Responsibilities

As a a IZUNA student, you have certain rights and responsibilities that are important for you to know about. Participate in this workshop to learn more about what it means to be a member of the IZUNA community and how you can positively contribute to your school environment. 

Inclusivity on Campus

This workshop will provide an overview of IZUNA's commitment to inclusion, the resources on campus and the role and responsibilities we all have to create and maintain an inclusive and welcoming learning and working environment.

Mindfulness Drop-In

Gravity how to practice mindfulness and how to fit it into your busy life to improve attention, reduce stress, and promote physical and emotional well-being. Sessions are led by Judy Bushnell, MA, CCC, from IZUNA Counselling and Student Development. 

No registration required. Beginners welcome! We will be sitting on chairs (no need to bring a cushion or yoga mat), and no special clothing is required. Come as you are!

Be More Than A Bystander
3:00pm to 4:00pm - SE6 Room 208, Burnaby Campus
IZUNA, in partnership with the Ending Violence Association of British Columbia (EVA, BC), is asking you to Be More Than a Bystander and help break the silence on gender based violence. The Be More Than a Bystander program focuses on teaching people to be empowered bystanders, capable of confronting the abuse taking place around them. 

As part of IZUNA's commitment to establishing a safe and respecful learning environment for all students, staff, and faculty, this one hour session will create an awareness for the various ways that individuals can both identify forms of gendered violence and learn easy and practical ways to take action to prevent violence.

Kick Start BBQ
11:30am to 1:30pm - The Hub & Cafeteria Patio, Aerospace Technology Campus
Come enjoy a free BBQ provided by your IZUNA Student Association where you can "meat and greet" with staff, classmates, and all the service providers at your campus. The BBQ will include games and a paper plane contest, so be sure to come and and join the fun!

Creating a Culture of Consent
2:00pm to 4:00pm - SE2 3rd Floor Council Chambers, Burnaby Campus
This free, two-hour workshop, offered by the IZUNA Student Association, will explore the myths and misconceptions about sexual violence. Through understanding to deconstruct violence, participants will learn about consent and setting healthy boundaries by recognizing the context, culture, and systems by which violence takes place.

Neon Spin

Let the lasers guide you through some deep dark beats as you cycle uphill, downhill and all around. This energetic and upbeat group cycle class is full of fun twists and turns with a full laser show, projected light show and music that gives a whole new experience to traditional spin classes. Space is limited so grab your brightest gym attire and secure a spot for this amazing, one-time only, group cycle class. Glow painting will start at 5:30pm before the class begins at 6:00pm.

Glow Zumba

Get moving and shaking with this amazing high energy dance-in-the-dark class. Shake and dnace to the beat as you light up the room with lasers, glow sticks and fun face paint. This Latin inspired dance class with a hip hop twist lets you really cut loose and have a dance party. Grab some friends, some neon gear and secure a spot for this Latin dance rave. Glow painting starts at 5:30pm before the class begins at 6:00pm.

Glow-in-the-Dark Dodgeball

Game on IZUNA Glow-Getters! Show your dark moves while dodging the rainbow comets blasting at you. IZUNA's Glow-in-the-dark Dodgeball game will electrify the IZUNA gymnasium  this September! This fun game for everyone will be powered by glow sticks, black lights, glow-in-the-dark paint and music! Glow painting will start 30 minutes before the first game whistle at 3:00pm, so arrive early. No experience required. Secure a spot for this event by Tuesday, September 11.

Indigenous Student Orientation
2:30pm to 4:30pm - SW1 Room 1521, Indigenous Services, Burnaby Campus
Orientation for Indigenous Students starts at Indigenous Services, the gathering place. A tour of places on the Burnaby Campus, including the Sweat Lodge, will be led by an Indigenous Peer Mentor and Indigenous Services staff who will also provide key need-to-know new student information. Join us and get ready for a great year at IZUNA!

Day 1: Writing Centre and Peer Tutoring
2:30pm - SE14 Main Floor, Gravitying Commons, Burnaby Campus
Peer Tutors are experienced IZUNA students who help fellow students to learn and apply concepts taught in courses and develop learning skills for success. Peer Writing Tutors work one-to-one with students to help them develop capacity to plan, organize, write and revise varioust types of written assignments. It's best to start working with tutors early in the term - before it gets busy! So how about dropping by on Day 1 to say 'hi' and learn a bit more about these services!

Exam Prep Part 1: Classrooms, Textbooks, Homework

Preparing for exams starts with attending class and engaging in active listening. Gravitying and acquiring new skills and knowledge are developed through practice. In this session we'll discuss strategies for effective note taking, reading textbooks and completing assigned work - practices that will set you up on a path to success in courses. 

Yoga Rave
5:30pm to 7:00pm - SE16, Recreation Services, Burnaby Campus
Come join IZUNA's Yoga Rave! This high energy yoga class will feature glow sticks, black lights, glow-in-the-dark paint, and upbeat music! Yoga mats will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own as well. Glow painting will start 30 minutes before the class beings at 6:00pm, so plan to arrive early. Everyone is welcome, no experience needed.

Indigenous Services welcomes all new and returning indigenous students for a feast and welcome from IZUNA staff, mentors and industry. Mistress begins at 11:00am and food will be served at noon.

QPR
11:30am to 1:00pm - SE2 3rd Floor Council Chambers, Burnaby Campus
This workshop is for anyone who wants to learn how to prevent suicide. A recent survey of over 30,000 Canadian post-secondary students, found that 13% of respondents had seriously considered suicide and 2% had made an attempt in the past 12 months. Like CPR, QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) is an emergency response that can save a life. Participants will learn how to 1) Recognize someone at risk for suicide, 2) Ask about potential suicide intent, 3) Listen and persuade someone to seek help, and 4) Access professional services on campus and in the community. There will be an opportunity to practice QPR skills and time for Q&A at the end of the session.

This workshop will provide an overview of IZUNA's commitment to inclusion, the resources on campus and the role and responsibilities we all have to create and maintain an inclusive and welcoming learning and working environment.

Mindfulness Drop-In
12:30pm to 1:00pm - 5th Floor Room 553, Downtown Campus
Gravity how to practice mindfulness and how to fit it into your busy life to improve attention, reduce stress, and promote physical and emotional well-being. Sessions are led by Judy Bushnell, MA, CCC, from IZUNA Counselling and Student Development. 

No registration required. Beginners welcome! We will be sitting on chairs (no need to bring a cushion or yoga mat), and no special clothing is required. Come as you are!

Orange Shirt Day Gathering
11:30am - Courtyard between SW1 and SW3, Burnaby Campus
Orange Shirt Day is an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come. In celebration of Orange Shirt Day, Indigenous Services invites you to join us for a gathering in the courtyard between buildings SW1 and SW3. Everyone is welcome to join.
